Bruno will be the third of an Ali G Trilogy. First was "Ali G Indahouse", and next was "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," which did come out in theatres. Now, The "Bruno" Movie is coming to the big screen. I don't even know if this movie is going to be great, but since Sacha Baron Cohen is a comic journalistic genius, his film deserves support. Also, Bruno is my favorite character from Cohen's show. Bruno's character is ridiculous, yet ironically touches on many real aspects of being a gay man in fashion, and just being a gay man. Since the "Borat" movie came out, I have been waiting for "Bruno" to follow suite.
I came across a marathon of "Da Ali G Show" on HBO on accident. I was flipping channels at 11:30 pm, and I caught the sound of the drum'n'bass tempo. I stopped clicking and watched. The drum'n'bass soundtrack was used as transitional music between his skits. I saw a tall, skinny guy in a bright yellow running suit, with tons of bling on his fingers and around his neck, and a tight nylon flat cap. This was not the only thing I saw on the screen though, he was between two plus sized women in spandex outfits. Not only were the two women wearing spandex, but there were many long slits throughout the sides. They weren't just standing there either, but were in a conga style sandwich, rolling hips with some serious stank faces on. When the music stopped, the screen changed to a new skit. The visual was too funny and I had to see what this show was. The show continued with this goatee guy in the yellow jogging suit interviewing some pretty prominent individuals. What made the style of interviews on "Da Ali G" show unique was Cohen's approach, and his humor.
"Da Ali G Show" is comprised of three characters played by Sasha Baron Cohen. Ali G is the street savvy "G" with excellent street slang. His grammar is deliberately slanted and he irritates with moronic banter. Borat is from Kazakhstan and does many inappropriate things in his "cultural naivete". The reactions of some of the individuals involved, show hilarious racial patronizing and sarcastic tolerance. Sometimes the reactions are the funniest parts. Finally, Bruno is the fashion savvy homosexual from Austria. My favorite line is when he begins by saying how being gay is so fashionable,"...so that's why I am going to gayest part of America,...Alabama". Bruno wears clothes like; tight pants, boy tank tops-with his belly showing, leather, plastic, and always, the super-effeminate swag. Check out "Bruno in Alabama" on youtube for this segment, it's priceless. You have to watch this segment to completely appreciate the natives' reaction to Bruno. Cohen's delivery is witty and clever all while portraying each one of these three convincing characters of extreme, yet silly, stereotypes.
Like I said, I'm not sure that this movie will win any prominent awards, but hopefully will cause some laughs, ruffle some feathers, and dissipate some naivete- as is the nature of Cohen's characters. In this new movie, real people interact with Cohen's extremely gay personality, Bruno. Go see The "Bruno" Movie July 10,2009. The rating is NC-17, so there should be just enough nudity, dirty jokes and/or swearing to keep it entertaining. See you at the movies.
