I know that I've written about my mom before, but she amazes me so much, I had to write about her again. After completing a marathon in San Francisco for Stroke, my mom came home and resolved to step up her competitions again.
"I think I'll try a triathlon" my mom lightly hinted.
I knew that my mom would be training for a triathlon, but sure enough, she is doing a mini-triathlon. This is a quarter mile swim, ten miles on the cycle, and a three mile run. She says this triathlon is called "the sprint". I've done sports like track, and swimming, but a three mile run was never implied to be a sprint.
I guess endurance, and mind over matter are a huge part of completing these long races. Not only the physical pain, but elements (water) and machinery (cycle) impact the competition.
In her sixty-one years of life, my mom has been a huge inspiration to me. Now that time and age have given her a five daughter family, a masters degree, and huge achievements like climbing Mount Whitney, and participating in marathons and tri-athalons, she could already be considered successful. This does not seem to be her motivation, as she continues to push her adventures despite the typical idea of what a sixty year old woman should be doing.
My mom is still an active part of my life, and she maintains concern for my well-being. When I need a listener or a confidant, she makes herself available to me. I am grateful to have such a woman in my life, and I aspire to be as well-rounded and spry as she is- not only in my later years, but today and every day.
